US sales tax on Etsy: what Etsy handles and what it doesn't
The good news for US sellers is that this is largely handled for you. The trap is that the money still flows through your records, and almost every incorrect revenue figure in a handmade shop’s books has sales tax somewhere inside it.
What Etsy does
Etsy states that to comply with applicable US tax laws, it will calculate, collect and remit sales tax on your behalf for orders shipped to customers in US locations. Where the sale went through Etsy Payments, the sales tax amount appears in your payment account and is deducted from your current balance.
There’s a related wrinkle for digital goods: for certain states — Etsy names Washington among them — it uses the category you assigned to each listing to calculate the tax, and for digital items it goes by the buyer’s billing address rather than a shipping address. Which is a quiet argument for categorising listings accurately.
Etsy also notes it may adjust rates if the tax information you provided is incorrect or invalid, and that keeping your location details current is your responsibility.
The part that breaks your bookkeeping
Sales tax appears in your payment account and on your statement. It looks exactly like money you handled — because briefly, you did. It was never yours.
Three places that goes wrong:
- Revenue is overstated. If you total order amounts including tax, your gross receipts are too high — and every margin percentage calculated from them is too low, making healthy products look marginal.
- Your payout doesn’t reconcile. You’re comparing a bank deposit that excludes the tax against an order total that includes it. That gap is one of the reasons deposits never match sales.
- Your tax return starts from the wrong number. Gross receipts including collected sales tax is not what belongs there.
Why your processing fee looks too high
A detail that confuses people reading their statement closely. Etsy does not charge its 6.5% transaction fee on sales tax it collects and remits for US sellers. Payment processing is different — it’s assessed on the total amount the buyer was charged, which does include the tax.
So processing looks like more than 3% of your revenue, and it is: it’s 3% of a larger number. Nothing is wrong, and it’s worth knowing before you spend an evening trying to reconcile it. The full breakdown is in what Etsy takes.
What this doesn’t cover
Etsy handling collection for its marketplace doesn’t settle your own position. Two things sit outside it:
- Sales you make elsewhere. Craft fairs, your own website, wholesale, Pattern — those may carry obligations Etsy’s marketplace collection doesn’t address.
- Your own registrations and filings. Whether you need to be registered in your state, and what you must file even where a marketplace collects on your behalf, is a question for your accountant rather than a guide.
The useful principle: Etsy solves the collection problem for Etsy sales. It doesn’t make you not a business.
What to actually do
Keep sales tax out of revenue in your own records, and take gross receipts from a figure that excludes it. That single habit prevents most of the errors above.
The statement is where to check it — it shows tax as its own row type, separate from sales and fees. The statement guide covers reading it, and MakerMargin excludes collected sales tax from revenue when computing per-product profit, so the margins it reports are on money that was actually yours.
Etsy’s collection and remittance of US sales tax, the Washington and digital-item treatment by billing address and listing category, the note about adjusting rates for incorrect tax information, and the exclusion of sales tax from the 6.5% transaction fee while payment processing applies to the full amount charged, are all from Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy, read 14 September 2026. State-level marketplace facilitator rules vary and are not covered here. General information, not tax advice.

Short answers
Does Etsy collect sales tax for sellers?
Yes. Etsy states that to comply with applicable US tax laws it will calculate, collect and remit sales tax on your behalf for orders shipped to customers in US locations. If the sale was through Etsy Payments, the sales tax amount appears in your payment account and is deducted from your current balance.
Is Etsy sales tax part of my income?
No, and counting it is a common error. The money was collected from the buyer and remitted to a tax authority — it passes through your records without ever belonging to you. Including it inflates your gross receipts and every margin figure calculated from them.
Do Etsy fees apply to sales tax?
Partly. Etsy does not charge its 6.5% transaction fee on sales tax it collects and remits for US sellers. Payment processing is different — it's assessed on the total amount the buyer was charged, which includes the tax, which is why processing looks like slightly more than 3% of your revenue.
How much does Etsy take per sale?
