Does Etsy charge fees on shipping? Yes — here's the math

Updated September 14, 2026 · 5 min read · Sources checked on publication

Yes — Etsy’s 6.5% transaction fee applies to the shipping you charge, not only to the item price. It is a small number per order and a persistent one, and it catches sellers out because shipping feels like money passing through rather than income. Etsy does not see it that way.

Shipping is charged twice, in opposite directions

There are two shipping amounts in every order and they are unrelated to each other. Etsy takes 6.5% of the first and bills you the second:

  • What you charged the buyer. Part of the sale, and part of the base for the transaction fee — and for the Offsite Ads fee, when it applies.
  • What the postage label cost you. A separate charge on your Etsy bill, at whatever the carrier actually wanted. Nothing ties it to the first number.

On $6 of shipping the transaction fee is $0.39. That is not a large number until you notice it is per order, every order, forever — a shop doing 60 orders a month pays about $280 a year in fees on postage alone.

Free shipping does not avoid the fee

This is the part that surprises people. With free shipping, the postage is folded into the item price, and the 6.5% applies to the item price. The fee does not go anywhere; it just stops being visible on its own line.

A $32 item with $6 shipping charged
$32.00 + $6.00 shipping$38.00
Etsy listing fee−$0.20
Transaction fee (6.5%)−$2.47
Payment processing−$1.39
You keep 89% of the sale$33.94
A $38 item with free shipping
$38.00 (free shipping)$38.00
Etsy listing fee−$0.20
Transaction fee (6.5%)−$2.47
Payment processing−$1.39
You keep 89% of the sale$33.94

Identical fees, to the cent. The buyer pays $38 either way, and so Etsy takes the same cut either way.

Free shipping is worth considering for how buyers respond to it and how Etsy’s search treats it. It is not worth considering as a way to reduce fees, because it does not reduce them at all.

Where shipping actually eats the margin

The real risk is not the 6.5%. It is the gap between the shipping you charged and the label you bought, which only shows up after the fact.

Charged $6 for shipping, the label cost $9.40
$32.00 + $6.00 shipping$38.00
Etsy listing fee−$0.20
Transaction fee (6.5%)−$2.47
Payment processing−$1.39
Shipping label−$9.40
You keep 65% of the sale$24.54

Etsy's fees were $4.06. The $3.40 shipping shortfall is almost as large, and appears nowhere in any fee calculator.

Flat-rate shipping makes this happen quietly. A rate set for a typical local order loses money on every heavy or cross-country one, and the shop average hides it — which is exactly why this needs to be checked per product rather than per shop. An item you price for a $6 label and routinely ship for $9 is a product line that gets less profitable the more of it you sell.

How to find your own number

The order CSV Etsy exports contains what you charged for shipping. Your label costs are on the same statement. Comparing them per product — not per month — is what turns this from a vague worry into a decision about one specific item’s price or packaging.

That comparison is what MakerMargin does automatically on import: charged shipping, actual label, Etsy’s cut of both, and the materials you entered once. You can also check a single order with the free fee calculator, which has a field for the label, or read the full breakdown of Etsy’s fees.

Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy states that the 6.5% transaction fee applies to “the price you display for each listing plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping”, and that payment processing is assessed on the total sale including tax and shipping. Questions

Short answers

Does Etsy charge a transaction fee on shipping?

Yes. Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee applies to the shipping price you charge the buyer as well as the item price. On $6 of shipping that is $0.39 per order, charged whether or not the postage actually cost you that much.

Does free shipping avoid Etsy's shipping fee?

No. With free shipping the postage is built into your item price, and the 6.5% transaction fee applies to the item price. A $32 item with $6 shipping and a $38 item with free shipping both produce $4.06 in Etsy fees — identical. Free shipping is a pricing and search-placement decision, not a way to reduce fees.

Is the shipping label I buy included in Etsy's fees?

No, it is a separate charge. Etsy takes 6.5% of the shipping you charged the buyer, and then separately bills you for the postage label you purchase. Both come out of the same order, and profit tools that count only one of them will overstate your margin.
