Etsy Purchase Protection: what it covers, and what voids it

Updated September 14, 2026 · 6 min read · Sources checked on publication

Purchase Protection is the closest thing Etsy offers to insurance, and it’s consistently underused — partly because sellers don’t know the cover exists, and partly because the exclusion that catches people most is entirely within their own control.

What it actually does

For an eligible order, Etsy covers up to $250 of a refund, or the converted equivalent in your local currency, and any remaining amount is charged to you. You don’t issue the refund yourself.

That is a meaningful backstop for a handmade seller. A parcel lost in transit is normally a total loss — materials, hours and postage gone with no recourse — and this turns most of those into an Etsy cost rather than yours.

When it may apply

Situations Etsy lists as potentially covered
A buyer never received their package — for example, it was lost in transit
The item arrived 7 or more days after the estimated delivery window given at checkout
The item arrived damaged — the first instance per calendar year
The item matches the listing description and photos, but the buyer claims it doesn't

Two of those deserve a second look. Late delivery is measured against the estimated delivery window shown at checkout — which is derived partly from your processing time, so an over-optimistic processing time makes late-arrival claims more likely, not less. And damage is covered only for the first instance per calendar year, so a fragile product with a packaging problem is covered once and then isn’t.

What voids it

Situations Etsy lists as making an order ineligible
The order doesn't meet one or more of the eligibility requirements
The item genuinely doesn't match the listing description
You have third-party insurance, or carrier or payment processor coverage — claim there first
Your shop isn't in good standing, for violating Etsy policies

Etsy is explicit that sellers are responsible for refunding costs for orders that fall outside the eligibility requirements.

The exclusion you control

Look at the pairing carefully. Etsy covers you when an item matches the listing and the buyer claims it doesn’t. It does not cover you when the item genuinely doesn’t match — and Etsy strongly recommends using accurate photos and descriptions.

That makes listing accuracy an insurance question, not just a conversion one. A flattering photo, an unstated size difference, a colour that photographs warmer than it is — each of those moves an order from the covered column to the uncovered one. It is the rare case where honest photography pays you directly rather than just eventually. The photography guide covers making photos that hold up.

Claim your own coverage first

If you bought shipping insurance, or your carrier or payment processor provides cover, Etsy asks you to submit a claim to that primary source instead. Worth knowing before you assume Purchase Protection is the first port of call — and worth factoring in before buying separate insurance on items under $250, where you may be paying for cover you already have.

How to stay eligible

  • Stay in good standing. Policy violations don’t just risk your shop; they remove this cover.
  • Meet Etsy’s customer service standards. The same metrics that drive your ranking — review rating, response rate, case rate — gate the protection too.
  • Set a processing time you can hold, since it feeds the estimated delivery window that the late-arrival criterion is measured against. More in processing times.
  • Describe the item exactly. Including the unflattering parts — size, weight, variation in a handmade finish.

What it doesn’t change

Purchase Protection covers the refund. It doesn’t give you back the materials, the hours or the postage on a lost parcel, and it doesn’t undo whatever the episode does to your review rating or case rate. So it softens the financial hit rather than removing the event — the wider cost of a refund is in what a refund really costs.

It also has a ceiling. Above $250 you carry the balance, which is worth knowing if you sell higher-value work: that’s the point where separate shipping insurance stops being duplicate cover and starts being sensible.

The $250 cover, the four covered situations including the first-damage-per-calendar-year limit, the four exclusions, the instruction to claim third-party or carrier coverage first, and the statement that sellers are responsible for refunds outside the eligibility requirements are all from Etsy’s help centre article “What is Etsy’s Purchase Protection for Sellers?”, read 14 September 2026. Etsy notes that cases opened before 7 May 2026 fall under the policy in effect at that time. This summarises Etsy’s published policy — read the full programme terms before relying on it.

Questions

Short answers

What does Etsy Purchase Protection cover for sellers?

For eligible orders Etsy covers up to $250 of a refund, or the equivalent in your local currency, and you don't issue the refund yourself — any amount above that is charged to you. It can apply when a package never arrived, when an item arrived 7 or more days after the estimated delivery window given at checkout, when an item arrived damaged (the first instance per calendar year), and when an item matches the listing but the buyer claims it doesn't.

When does Etsy Purchase Protection not apply?

When the order doesn't meet the eligibility requirements, when the item genuinely doesn't match the listing description, when you have third-party insurance or carrier or payment processor coverage (Etsy asks you to claim there first), or when your shop isn't in good standing for violating Etsy policies. Sellers are responsible for refunding costs outside those requirements.

How do I make sure my orders stay eligible?

Keep your shop in good standing, meet Etsy's customer service standards, and — the one most within your control — make sure your photos and description genuinely match what you send. Etsy explicitly excludes items that don't match the listing, which turns an overstated listing into an uninsured one.
