Writing an Etsy listing that gets found and then gets bought
A listing has to do two different jobs, and they aren’t the same skill. It has to be found, which is a matching problem, and then it has to be bought, which is a persuasion problem. Most listings are built entirely for the first and then wonder why the traffic doesn’t convert.
What Etsy says it looks at
Etsy describes its search system taking a holistic view of a listing — including title, tags, attributes, descriptions, first photo and reviews — to connect items with the right buyers. Separately it names listing quality, including multiple high-quality photos and a return policy, among its ranking factors, and it uses listing engagement, meaning how many viewers go on to buy.
Which gives every part of the page a specific job:
| Part | Its job | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Matching, and the first line a human reads | Front-load real phrases |
| Tags | Matching — 13 of them, 20 characters each | Vary them; don't repeat the title |
| Attributes & category | Matching, for free | The most-skipped opportunity |
| First photo | Matching, and winning the click in the grid | Must read at thumbnail size |
| Other photos | Conversion — answering doubts | Scale, colour, the back, in use |
| Description | Conversion — and some matching | Answer the questions people message about |
| Return policy | Listing quality, which Etsy ranks on | Etsy names it explicitly |
The matching half
Titles: phrases, front-loaded, still readable
Write the phrases a buyer would type, and put the most important one first. “Silver hoop earrings” beats “earrings” because it matches the longer, more specific searches that actually convert.
The title is also the first line a human reads in the grid, which is the argument against stuffing it. A title that has become an unreadable keyword list has traded the conversion half for a marginal gain in the matching half — and since the title is one input among several, that trade is usually bad.
Tags: all 13, genuinely different
Etsy allows 13 tags of up to 20 characters, and says using all of them with variety increases your chance of matching. The failure mode is thirteen near-identical phrases, which compete for one query. Thirteen different angles — material, occasion, recipient, style, colour, use — enter thirteen different pools.
Attributes and category: free, and half-filled everywhere
Etsy says adding all the relevant attribute options and categorising as specifically as you can may increase the chance of matching a query. This is the cheapest work on the page and the most commonly abandoned halfway. It takes a minute per listing.
The conversion half
Photos beyond the first
The first photo wins the click; the rest answer doubts. Scale is the most common uncertainty in handmade listings, followed by colour accuracy and what the unseen parts look like. The photography guide covers the thumbnail problem in detail.
Descriptions: answer the messages you keep getting
The best possible description brief is your own inbox. Read the last twenty customer questions; anything asked more than twice belongs in the description, because for every person who asked, several didn’t and left.
Structure it for someone skimming on a phone: the essential facts first — what it is, size, material, when it ships — then the story, then the practical details. A beautiful paragraph of brand narrative above the dimensions is a conversion problem wearing good writing.
The return policy is a ranking input
Easy to forget because it lives in settings rather than in the listing editor. Etsy names it alongside photos as part of listing quality, and having a clear one is also what prevents problems becoming cases — shop policies covers that.
Why the two halves reinforce each other
Conversion feeds ranking. Etsy watches how many people who see a listing go on to buy, so improving the persuasive half raises the matching half too — a listing that converts better gets shown more, which gives it more chances to convert.
That’s why “fix conversion before chasing traffic” is usually the right order of operations: it’s the only one of the two that improves both.
One thing to check before optimising anything
Listing work is time, and time is the scarce resource. Before spending an afternoon on a listing, it’s worth knowing whether that product is one you want more orders of — since the highest-converting listings are frequently the cheapest ones, which carry the worst fee percentage.
MakerMargin computes profit per product from the order file Etsy already exports, so you can point the optimisation at products that deserve it. The bestseller problem explains why that’s often not the listing you’d assume.
The holistic view of a listing in query matching (title, tags, attributes, descriptions, first photo, reviews), the advice to use all 13 tags with variety and to add all relevant attributes and categorise specifically, listing quality including multiple photos and a return policy, and listing engagement as a ranking factor are all from Etsy’s Seller Handbook article “How Etsy Search Works”. The 13-tag limit and 20-character maximum are from Etsy’s help centre. Both read 14 September 2026.
Do this for every order at once
MakerMargin reads the order file Etsy already exports and runs this math across your whole shop — per product, per month, with your materials included and a tax-ready year-end summary. See your last 30 days free, no card needed.
Short answers
What should an Etsy listing title contain?
The words a buyer would actually type, front-loaded, in phrases rather than single keywords. Etsy's search takes a holistic view of your listing including the title, tags, attributes, description and first photo — so the title is one matching input among several rather than the only one, and stuffing it with disconnected keywords costs you readability for little gain.
Do Etsy listing descriptions affect search?
Yes — Etsy names descriptions among the things its search system looks at when connecting listings to buyers. But the description's bigger job is conversion: it answers the questions that would otherwise become a message or a lost sale, and conversion is itself a ranking factor.
Are Etsy attributes important?
They're the cheapest matching opportunity on the page and the most commonly half-filled. Etsy says adding all the relevant attribute options and categorising as specifically as you can may increase the chance your listing matches a query. They cost nothing and take a minute.
How much does Etsy take per sale?
The full stack of fees on one order, added up on real numbers instead of percentages.
