Etsy gift wrap: priced properly, or quietly free?

Updated September 14, 2026 · 5 min read · Sources checked on publication

Gift wrap is a small option with a habit of being quietly free. Etsy treats the charge like any other part of the sale — its transaction fee applies to gift wrapping just as it does to the item and the shipping — and most sellers price it at the cost of the paper, which leaves the minutes unpaid.

What Etsy takes

Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy is explicit: the transaction fee is charged on the price you display for each listing plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping. The regulatory operating fee, in countries where it applies, is calculated on the same base.

On a $32.00 item with $6.00 shipping, adding a $5.00 gift wrap charge increases Etsy’s fees by $0.48 — the 6.5% transaction fee plus payment processing on the extra amount. So of your $5.00, you keep about $4.52.

That is not the problem. The problem is what the remaining $4.52 has to cover.

What gift wrap actually costs you

  • Materials: paper, ribbon, a gift tag or card, and often a sturdier box than you’d otherwise use.
  • Time: the wrapping itself, plus reading the gift message and writing it out by hand if you offer that.
  • The broken batch: the same problem as personalization. If you pack ten orders in a rhythm, the one that needs wrapping and a handwritten card interrupts it, and the setup cost lands on that single order.
  • Risk: a handwritten message is a thing that can be got wrong, and getting a gift message wrong is a refund rather than a complaint.

Price gift wrap at the cost of the paper and you are charging for perhaps a third of it — the same error pattern that makes custom work unprofitable.

How to price it

Time yourself wrapping one properly, including the message. Add the materials. Then divide by one minus your fee rate so Etsy’s cut comes out of the charge rather than your margin — the method in the pricing guide.

For many shops that lands somewhere around $4 to $6 rather than the $2 they were charging. If that feels like too much to ask, the alternative isn’t to charge less — it’s to simplify the wrap until it costs less to do.

Or make it free, deliberately

There is a respectable case for free gift wrap, but it should be a decision rather than a drift. If your items are mostly bought as gifts and your packaging is already part of the appeal, building a simple wrap into every order can be cheaper than offering it as an option: you do the same thing every time, so it stays inside your packing rhythm instead of breaking it, and there’s no separate charge for Etsy to take a cut of.

What doesn’t work is offering it as a $2 option and doing $6 of work — which is the most common arrangement, and the one that gets steadily more expensive the better your shop does.

The Q4 caveat

Gift wrap demand concentrates in exactly the weeks your capacity is tightest. A wrap that is a pleasant touch in March can be the thing that makes you late in December — and late orders cost far more than the wrap earns, because review rating and case rate feed Etsy’s ranking for three months afterwards.

It is entirely reasonable to price gift wrap higher in Q4, or to simplify it for the season. Decide before the rush, alongside the rest of Q4 planning, rather than discovering the problem in the middle of it.

The wording that the transaction fee applies to “the price you display for each listing plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping” is from Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy, read 14 September 2026. The fee on the gift wrap charge is computed at render time by the same fee engine MakerMargin bills against. Material costs and times are illustrative — measure your own.

Questions

Short answers

Does Etsy charge fees on gift wrapping?

Yes. Etsy's transaction fee applies to the price you display plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping, so a gift wrap charge carries the same 6.5% as everything else. The regulatory operating fee, where it applies, is calculated on the same base.

How much should I charge for gift wrap on Etsy?

Enough to cover the materials and the minutes, after Etsy's cut — which means working out what the wrap actually costs including the ribbon, card and the time to write it, then dividing by one minus your fee rate. Most sellers price it at the cost of the paper and absorb the time, which is where a nice touch becomes an unpaid one.

Is offering gift wrap worth it?

Often yes, especially in Q4, because it signals the item is ready to give and removes work for the buyer. It's worth it as a priced option that covers its cost — and worth reconsidering if it's slowing your packing at exactly the time of year your capacity is tightest.
