Is Etsy Ads worth it? Do this calculation first

Updated September 14, 2026 · 7 min read · Sources checked on publication

Etsy Ads is easy to switch on and hard to evaluate, which is a bad combination. The decision is usually made on a feeling — sales went up, so it must be working — when it is one of the few marketing questions with a genuinely exact answer. The answer needs one number, and it is the number most sellers don’t have.

First, what Etsy Ads is and isn’t

It places your listings in the designated advertising slots in Etsy search. You set a daily maximum budget, at or above a minimum Etsy sets, and Etsy won’t charge more than that maximum in a day. Bids are made in US dollars, and the charges come out of your payment account, appearing on your monthly statement as a shop-level cost rather than against any particular order.

What it is not is a way to improve your organic position. Etsy states that running an Etsy Ads campaign does not influence where your listings appear in search outside those designated ad spaces. The widely repeated idea that advertising gives a listing momentum that carries over into free placement is not how Etsy describes its own system. There is more on what genuinely does rank in what Etsy says actually ranks.

The number you need first

Advertising is affordable or not depending entirely on what a sale is worth to you — not revenue, and not margin before your own time. Take the product from our pricing examples: a $48 item, $15 of materials, 45 minutes of labor.

What one sale of this product actually earns
$48.00 (free shipping)$48.00
Etsy listing fee−$0.20
Transaction fee (6.5%)−$3.12
Payment processing−$1.69
Your materials−$15.00
Your time−$15.00
You keep 27% of the sale$12.99

This is your true ceiling on ad spend per sale. Not $48, and not the $27.99 you'd get by ignoring your own time.

So this product can bear up to about $13 of advertising per additional sale before the sale stops being worth making — and paying anywhere near the ceiling means working for nothing. If you want to keep half the margin, your real budget is around $6.50 a sale.

Note what happens if you skip the labor line. Counting only fees and materials, this product looks like it earns $27.99, and a $20 cost per sale looks tolerable. It isn’t — at $20 you are paying $7 for the privilege of spending 45 minutes making something. That single omission is the most common reason ad spend quietly destroys a shop’s profitability.

Turning that into a click budget

Ads are billed per click, not per sale, so the ceiling depends on how many clicks it takes to produce one order. If your listing converts one visitor in fifty, fifty clicks buy one sale.

Break-even cost per click on a $12.99 margin, by conversion rate
Sales per 100 clicksClicks per saleBreak-even cost per click
1%100$0.13
2%50$0.26
3%33$0.39
5%20$0.65

Break-even is not a target — it is the line where advertising earns you exactly nothing for the work. Aim meaningfully below it, and treat a campaign that only works at break-even as a campaign that doesn’t work.

The measurement trap

Etsy will show you revenue attributed to ads, and attributed revenue is a seductive number because it is always positive. Two things to hold in mind:

  • Attributed is not incremental. Some of those buyers would have found you in organic search anyway. You are paying for a share of sales you already had, and nothing in the dashboard separates the two.
  • Revenue is the wrong unit. $500 of attributed revenue on products with a 27% margin is about $135 of actual profit. If the ads cost $180, the campaign lost money while reporting a large, encouraging number.

The honest test is whether your total profit rose by more than the ad spend, over a period long enough to mean something — not whether attributed revenue exceeded it.

When Etsy Ads tends to make sense

  • On your highest-margin products, not your bestsellers. These are often different listings, and advertising the wrong one buys you volume on your thinnest product.
  • On a listing that already converts well organically. Ads amplify an existing conversion rate; they don’t create one.
  • Seasonally, when buying intent is high and the same click is worth more.
  • Not at all, if you don’t know your per-product margin yet. That isn’t a slogan — without it you cannot tell a good campaign from a bad one, and the dashboard will happily report success either way.

MakerMargin computes that per-product margin from the order file Etsy already exports, including your materials, so you can set a budget against a real ceiling. You can also work out a single product by hand with the free fee calculator.

Etsy Ads billing mechanics (daily maximum budget, Etsy-set minimum, USD bids) from Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy; the statement that Etsy Ads does not influence organic placement from Etsy’s Seller Handbook article “How Etsy Search Works”. Both read 14 September 2026. The margin example is computed by the same fee engine MakerMargin bills against; the conversion rates in the table are illustrative — substitute your own, since they vary enormously by price point.

Do this for every order at once

Questions

Short answers

Does Etsy Ads improve your organic search ranking?

No. Etsy states that running an Etsy Ads campaign does not influence where your listings appear in search outside the designated advertising spaces. Ads buy the ad slots and nothing else — the common belief that advertising warms up a listing's organic position isn't how Etsy describes it.

How much should I spend on Etsy Ads?

Work from margin, not from a budget that feels affordable. If a product earns you $12 after fees, materials and your time, then $12 is the absolute ceiling on what one extra sale can cost to buy — and you want to be well under it. Setting a daily budget without knowing per-sale margin is how shops spend a season's profit on traffic.

How is Etsy Ads billed?

You set a daily maximum budget, at or above a minimum Etsy sets, and Etsy won't charge more than that maximum on a given day. Bids are made in US dollars. The charges come out of your payment account and appear on your monthly statement as a shop-level cost, not attached to any particular order — which is why they're easy to lose track of.
